Benchmarking the Hijriyah App from DsSoft

Android Hijriyah Calendar app V1.1.1 from DsSoft:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dssoft.hijriyahwidget

has received new following features:

  • Implementation of parallax correction to geocentric lunar equatorial position.
  • Implementation of standard atmospheric refraction offset for elevation angle.

In this post, we will compare the results of lunar position calculation from the app with Geoscience Australia. The following procedures are followed.
  1. Open "Hijriyah Calendar" app in your mobile.
  2. Firstly change the location to Pelabuhan Ratu by clicking setting button .
  3. Enter location 106°33'E 6°59'S for Pelabuhan Ratu, Indonesia.

  4. Click OK.
  5. In the main screen, look for sun set information in the hilal information of current month, e.g. 2012-02-10 18:19.
  6. Go to Geoscience Australia web page http://www.ga.gov.au/geodesy/astro/smpos.jsp.
  7. Enter the location longitude 106°33'E latitude 6°59'S and the time obtained in step 5, i.e. 02/10/2013,18:19:00. Then select "Compute".
  8. The following results are from Geoscience Australia.
====================================

Sun or Moon Position Results

   Lat= -6°59'00"  Long=+106°33'00"  Height=0.0m

AZIMUTH AND ALTITUDE OF THE MOON
Time zone: +7.00 hours
Altitude includes astronomical refraction angle for a standard atmosphere.
   Date      Time     Refraction    Azimuth     Altitude
10/02/2013 18:19:00    00°00'00"   261°00'49"   -2°09'53"

Computed using National Mapping Division's sunmoonposn program, version 1.1

===================================
The results from the app showing azimuth 261°01'08" and -2°04'33" at 02/10/2013 18:19, which is the sun set time at which the hilal of Rabiul Akhir 1434 H is observed.

Hence, the results obtained from the app and Geoscience website differ less then 1' for azimuth and around 5' for the altitude.
